In my opinion the plants in a freshwater aquarium is equally important to the fish. The plants make the aquarium look alive and more natural. It also of course fills the void in in the tank and give shelter to the fish. I want tank to have many plants and them to grow well so we try to do everything we can do ensure good plant growth. I don’t say the plants in our aquarium are in bad shape, but since I try to focus on them very much, I think they could look better. Some of the plants are from the old tank, but since it was a lot smaller than the current one, we had to buy new plants.
We give the plants Easy-Life ProFito. Our aquarium tank is 180l so I give 15ml of it weekly. This is a general plant fertilizer that should include everything the plants need. But plants also need CO2 for their photosynthesis. CO2 is produces in the aquarium by the bacteria, decomposition of organics and the fish too. But usually this alone is not enough for the plants. And especially in our case where the aquarium still doesn’t have many fish, I believe the plants would not get enough CO2 without a bit of help. So we also have a CO2 system in our aquarium that will release extra CO2 to the water. I give about 3-4 tablets a week, although the instructions mention “above 30 gallons – several times a day”, but I don’t really buy this. Maybe I should give a tablet every day?
So please let me know what else is needed for well functioning plants in an aquarium. Should I also give the plants regularly fertilizer tablets as well? My water is a bit alkali – is this bad for them? I don’t have any NO2 and little NO3 in the water and I change the water almost weekly at least some amounts of it. Is this ok?
